A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan is a quick, non-invasive exam that uses very low radiation levels to measure bone mineral density (BMD). This test detects bone loss in its earliest stages and is the most effective way to diagnose and monitor osteoporosis. DEXA scans are the most accurate method of determining bone density and potential problems related to bone loss. If you need a DEXA scan, contact our office at (843)881-4020 and schedule an appointment today.

Offering the most advanced densitometry technology available, The Women’s Imaging Center at Imaging Specialists uses Hologic DEXA equipment for high-quality imaging, high speed, and unmatched precision. It is an excellent tool for getting the most specific information required to help your healthcare provider make recommendations to help you protect your bones or treat the early signs of osteoporosis.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A BONE DENSITY SCAN?

  • Your healthcare provider may recommend a BMD test if you are:

  • A postmenopausal woman under age 65 with one or more risk factors for osteoporosis

  • A man aged 50-70 with one or more risk factors for osteoporosis

  • A man aged 70 or older, even without any risk factors

  • A woman or man after age 50 who has broken a bone

  • A woman going through menopause with certain risk factors

  • A postmenopausal woman who has stopped taking estrogen therapy (ET) or hormone therapy (HT)

Talk to your healthcare provider about these and other risk factors for osteoporosis that may require BMD testing.

A DEXA scan is a simple and painless exam that requires no prior preparation. We recommend wearing cotton clothing with no buttons or zippers and avoiding underwire bras.

  • The technologists will have you lie on a table with your legs straight or your lower legs resting on a platform to elevate them slightly.

  • You will be able to communicate with the technician during the procedure.

Once you are finished, you will be able to leave the imaging center and continue with your daily routine after the scan. One of our board-certified radiologists will interpret the results and report the findings to your doctor within 24 hours.

What is a Body Mass Index scan?

Our bone density machine performs body composition (BMI) scans to aid in the diagnosis of an individual’s overall health. A detailed and carefully measured representation of your body composition helps predict diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk. Body composition scans can help you track the benefit of improving diet, exercise, and lifestyle.

Benefits include

  • A non-invasive scan that takes less than 5 minutes to perform.

  • A color copy of body composition that includes an image showing where your body fat and muscle are distributed and the amount of fat around your organs.

  • Allows you to track the changes when modifications are made to diet, exercise, and lifestyle.

If you would like a Body Composition(BMI) scan, contact our office at (843)881-4020 and schedule an appointment today.
